MISSION BEGINNINGS

     Serra realizes the importance of separating the mission from the Monterey Presidio and selects a site for the Carmel Mission where the river enters the sea. As more Franciscans arrive other mission sites are chosen and their buildings begun. In the meantime, one of the most tragic incidents in mission history occurs and Serra realizes the missions and the native peoples will have to be separated from military authority.
