Chapter XI

THE LONG JOURNEY

    The events of the last chapter lead to Serra's plans to make the journey to Mexico City to obtain an order that will set the missions and their native residents free from military authority. Without this he knows the missions are doomed and the native peoples will be in the unmerciful hands of the harsh commandant and the unruly soldiers. Juan very much wants to accompany Old Father on the journey but fears his chief will not permit it.  Chief Tatlun, however, agrees, and the two head south
