VALLEY OF THE BEARS

     The plan for the journey was to accompany a mule train headed for San Diego and to stay with the escort as far as San Luis Obispo. This part of the trip went through the "Pass of the Oaks" which the Spaniards called Paso Robles, and from there into the Valley of the Bears where in the past large bears had roamed.  Once at the site of the new mission the first task was to erect a cross.
